Dr. Bruce Gentry's Academic Publishing Seminar

Come hear noted author/scholar, Bruce Gentry, discuss the world of academic publishing. Dr. Gentry is a distinguished scholar, the author of Conversations with Raymond Carver and Flannery O'Connor's Religion of the Grotesque and the forthcoming, At Home with Flannery O’Connor: An Oral History. Dr. Gentry is the editor of the Flannery O'Connor Review and edited the book, The Cartoons of Flannery O’Connor at Georgia College . He has also published in the South Atlantic Review, Southern Quarterly, Modern Fiction Studies as well many other prestigious journals. Besides being has been interviewed on Religion and Ethics on PBS., Dr. Gentry has had the honor of having multiple essays reprinted by Harold Bloom. Dr. Gentry will be speaking about the world of academic publishing.

Joseph Brown's article “Hulk Smashed! The Rhetoric of Alcoholism in Televisions Incredible Hulk” is in the current issue of the Journal of Popular Culture(https://www.msu.edu/~tjpc/index.htm).

A few days ago he received a very nice email from sociologist and alcoholism scholar, Ron Roizen, (whose work he engages rather heavily in the article) complementing the article.

Featured Readers Announced:

Pegasus is pleased to announce the featured readers for Writers' Harvest 2011, novelist Morris Smith and poet Andy Frazee.

Morris Smith lives in Valdosta, Georgia. She studied at Valdosta State University and at Tulane University and has worked as a teacher and social worker. In 1998 she was nominated as Georgia Author of the Year for a short story sequence, Spencer Road (University of Tennessee Press). In 2005 another story collection, Zambian Text, was published by Mercer University Press.

Andy Frazee is author of The Body, the Rooms (Subito Press, 2011) and That the World Should Never Again be Destroyed by Flood (New American Press, 2010). His Pushcart Prize-nominated poetry has appeared in 1913, Eleven Eleven, Cannot Exist, BlazeVOX, and other journals, and his book reviews and criticism regularly appear in Verse and The Quarterly Conversation. The son, grandson and great-grandson of farmers, he grew up in rural Central Illinois. A graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of Georgia, he currently holds a Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship at Georgia Tech.

Kramer's book, Fostering Student Success in the Campus Community, discusses how faculty and staff can help improve service delivery for students. Members of the Forum will meet throughout the fall to discuss the book and brainstorm ways to implement the book's suggestions. Three of Sandra Giles’ poems will appear in Shout Them From The Mountaintops: Georgia Poems and Stories II ("Crossing the Fall Line," "First Memory," and "At the Aquarium"), publication date soon to be announced. Also, she has a piece of short fiction in the current issue of Wilderness House Literary Review.

Pulitizer-Prize winner Claudia Emerson has selected Billy Reynolds’ poem “I stand in my father” for inclusion in the fall issue of the Louisville Review. Additionally, his poem “Dusk at Rocket Park” will be published in Gargoyle Magazine in spring 2012.

MCed by local writer (and ABAC English professor) Jeff Newberry, the Poetry/Jazz Cafe will be an open-mic event punctuated with some fine jazz by Tifton's own Fabulous Blues Devils, led by Vann Thornton. The music will begin at 6:00 p.m. A sign-up sheet for writers who'd like to read their work will be available the night of the cafe.

Michael Lewis is an Assistant Professor of English at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Michael has his MA from Oregon State University, where he was introduced to literacy studies and composition theory by Dr.
Lisa Ede. He completed his PhD in composition, rhetoric, and the teaching of college writing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Michael's ongoing teaching and research interests include ecocomposition, critical pedagogy, and histories of the organic metaphor in the teaching of writing.

First-Year Writing Program Receives Prestigious Award

During the fall term on behalf of the first year writing committee, our own Michael Lewis submitted a program description and awards packet to the Diana Hacker Outstanding Program in First year Writing Award. I am pleased to announce that our first-year writing program has been awarded national recognition. Specifically, we have received Honorable Mention in the contest and our proposal will be published in a national academic publication and our program will be honored at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC)in Atlanta in April 2011.

Spanish Instructor Robert Carpenter has received some excellent news. For the past several years, he has participated in the Court Interpreters Certification Program, and last week he learned that he passed his final oral certification exam. He is now a Georgia Certified Court Interpreter and can serve now as a court interpreter in Georgia’s Federal Courts.

2. Jeff Newberry, Cake, the literary journal at Florida A&M University, will be publishing his short story "An Authentic Life" in the Spring 2011issue. Cake is a print journal and publishes once a year. This is his first piece of fiction to be published
3. Joseph Brown—his essay "As the Constitution Says: Distinguishing Documents in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451," which was originally published in The Explicator in 2008, has been purchased by Gale for republication and inclusion in a volume called Social Issues in Literature: Censorship in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. It will be released in the second quarter of 2011.

5. Michael Lewis—just received his contributor’s copy of the Bay Area Poets Coalition's POETALK that includes his poem "Picking Up in Madison"

Jordan Cofer has just learned that his proposal for the Flannery O'Connor conference has been accepted. Additionally, student Matt Taylor's proposal was also accepted. Matt will be the only undergraduate presenter at the conference. Congratulations to both Jordan and Matt!

Georgia College will host the conference in April 2011 in Milledgeville as part of the Southern Trail's Trailfest 2011. "Startling Figures: A Celebration of the Legacy of Flannery O'Connor" will feature writers, scholars, artists, and musicians, all of whom draw inspiration from the work of Flannery O'Connor. Activities will take place on the Georgia College campus and at Andalusia, home of Flannery O'Connor.

Janice Daugharty, ABAC's New Writer-in-Residence

Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Janice Daugharty will join Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College as the Writer-in-Residence for the campus on July 1.

As a part time Writer-in-Residence at ABAC, Daugharty will be active in campus events, including Celebrate ABAC, the college’s Homecoming; and George Scott Day, the annual celebration of the arts. She will also serve as a consultant and participant in conferences, guest lecture in ABAC classes through the School of Liberal Arts, and do public readings and book signings in conjunction with the Department of Literature and Language, as well as with student literary organizations at the college.

Jordan Cofer was recently named Virginia Tech's Fall 2009 “Emerging Scholar.” It is a program for VT alums who have completed a PhD to come back and do a research presentation. My presentation is called “Flannery O’Connor and the Gospel of Irony” and is scheduled for Nov.5th. The presentation will examine how Flannery O’Connor was influenced by biblical models and how her fiction emulates these models.

I Hate Hamlet--a play

This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (9/17-19) and the following Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (9/24-26) the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts will present I Hate Hamlet, a comedy. It focuses on the trials of a television actor, Andrew Rally, who has left LA to come to New York to try his talents on the stage. He is cast in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but he gets nervous. The ghost of John Barrymore appears to offer him help in playing the role and in finally getting his girlfriend to give in to his amorous desires. Along the way, a lot of quirky effects, characters, and situations occur.

Directed by Dottie Freeman, the play has several ABAC connections. Dr. Brian Ray is playing the part of Gary, Andy’s writer-producer-director friend from LA, and Leahann Driscoll, a student here at ABAC, plays the quirky, and psychic, realtor who has helped Andy move into John Barrymore’s old apartment.

The show starts at 7:00 each evening of performance. The cost is $10. I hope that you will be able to come out and spend a couple of hours having fun and sharing in the experience of I Hate Hamlet.

Jordan Cofer is the recipient of Texas Tech University's 2009 Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Humanities/Fine Arts category. The award carries a prize of $1,500. The dissertation, "Flannery's Bible: Biblical Recapitulations in the Fiction of Flannery O'Connor," will be the Texas Tech nominee to the national competition sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools.
